The events of Through the Looking-Glass occur about six months after those in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. As Alice makes her way through a world resembling a giant chessboard, she finds herself to be a mere pawn. Carroll uses reflections, distortions and fantasy to create this parallel universe which is far more threatening than Wonderland. The frequent manipulations of time and spatial planes, used as a plot device to maintain the motifs of a mirror and chess, have made the novel fascinating for readers over generations. This narrative includes some of the most iconic of Carroll's imaginary characters, including Humpty Dumpty and the Red Queen. Renowned poems like The Walrus and the Carpenter and Jabberwocky also make their way into it. Where Alice's Adventures in Wonderland celebrates childhood, the darker tone of this novel, published six years later, strongly hints towards the grim inevitability of its loss
