Health and Care Management of Elephant About the Book and the author
In Sri Lanka, information on registration, management and disease control of domesticated elephants is very hard to get. The only national information is available with the Dept. of Wild Life and Conservation and with researchers who perform research on elephants. Therefore such data are not freely available to the public or scientists. Most domesticated elephant owners and mahouts and those who require more and more elephants to be domesticated, especially the Buddhist monks, do not have the scientific knowledge and skills about elephant care, management and handling disease conditions of elephants. The objective of writing this document is to provide scientific information on management and diseases of elephants so that all those who own and care for elephants will be aware of the basic sciences of managing elephants. The long-term goal is to ensure that elephants are allowed to live happily and easily as domesticated animals

The author of this publication is Dr A. S. Abeyratne, a Sri Lankan veterinarian, currently living in Unite States of America. As a wild life lover and a specialist on animal reproduction, he has published 18 books of which three books are on animal reproduction. He has functioned previously as a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Peradeniya, Consultant to the Ministry of Livestock Development and Dept. of Planning, Director, Dept.
